Celebrating Ya-Yas | Simple Scrapper Creative Design Team

Every month, I contribute at minimum two projects to the Simple Scrapper Spark magazine.  This magazine is distributed to the Simple Scrapper community as a guide for inspiration.  It includes sketches, story starters and differen tools in order to bring out the best in you while exploring this hobby.

However, I have been forgetting to post these layouts.
With every month, I set new creative goals and this month I am going to catch up.
Right.
Right?!? Errr.
Yes.

Although I can't share with you the sketches or story starters, I can assure you that they are amazing jumping off points.  In fact, I was very much happy with my start on this layout.  However, when it came to adding some layers, I didn't want my polka dots to get lost...  I heart polka dots so much and I just love that paper.

Tips & Tricks:// Use vellum as a layer when trying to follow a sketch in the event that you don't want to lose much of your background paper.

The story of the Ya-Yas was prompted by the story starter. I can hoenstly say I am grateful to have this story on paper.  Its been several months since it occurred and already the little details have been lost.  Regardless, its a story that I hope I can remember for many many years.

Truthfully, its really about the words on this page that makes it so special.

It was a secret that lasted for months.

My mother-in-law, Nancy was born in the United States.  Her two sisters, Cathy and Terry continue to live there with their families. The history of this is long and complicated but know that they didn’t grow up under the same roof for many of those years. However, they have developed a sisterhood that can only be envied.  They call themselves the Ya-Ya sisters and typically only see each other once a year. This particular year in 2016 was a difficult one as they lost their Mother unexpectedly. Of course, they seemed to have grown closer through those Summer weeks.

When the Fall came, Nancy had a planned Florida vacation with my family.  She was very much looking forward to the escape.  What she didn’t know was I had been planning with her two Ya-ya sisters to also join us.

My husband reminded me not  to tell his father now his sister.  They are not known for keeping secrets.

Plans were made with Cathy for flight times and meeting places. However, Nancy was curious as to our plans for the days on the vacation. I had plans but she couldn’t know them yet.

Keeping the secret began more and more difficult as we made it to Florida.  We arranged to meet at a restaurant; however, the restaurant wouldn’t let us be seated without the full party.  Trying to keep Nancy out of ear shot, I had to explain that there was a surprise going on and we needed to get seated... Cathy and Terry were in slow traffic and a little behind schedule.  Eventually a Manager knew what was happening as I had called the day before and let us into a room without any other customers.

We waited and delayed ordering for the two mysterious ladies to show up.  They both wore large sunglasses and wigs to disguise themselves.  And it worked. Nancy didn’t catch on at first but when she did, the tears flowed and the emotions were high.  The waitresses and staff were happy to see the reunion and I knew the secret could finally be shared.

Nancy got to go to Disney World for the first time with her Ya-Ya sisters.  She enjoyed the beaches, sunsets and drinks.  Making this trip to Florida a memory she will likely remember forever.

Thanks so much for dropping by,
Cathy

Real #NLWX | Simple Scrapper

There’s no other way to say it except that the weather can really get you down in Newfoundland. Our winters are incredibly long - you have to find a way to make your own sunshine.   Twenty-seventeen is starting out with  a consistent snowfall and then back to back blizzards in February. March brought a wind storm that nobody has seen in 60 years.  Winds were clocking at 160 km/h and we saw siding flying off our house. It’s days like this that you question why it is that you live here. Then you put on your snowsuit onto go out to shovel but your neighbour has already done it for you.
Then you remember...
I love this place & the people in it.

This 8.5"x11" scrapbook page was created for Spark Magazine and was inspired by journalling prompts. These tools are available with a membership at Simple Scrapper.  For more information , pop over to the Simple Scrapper website led by Jennifer Wilson.

Father + Grandmother | Simple Scrapper

I have been ploughing through my December 2015 album and came across these photos of my Grandmother (81) and my father (60).  When I look at these pictures I see happiness. It was important to me at that moment to get this story told.  I shuffled the pictures around but couldn't get it just right. That's when a sketch can help.  If you forget about everything else going on, just lay the photos where the sketch says.  Just plop a circle or some journalling... and next thing you know... you just might have figured it all out.

Inspiration comes from many places... right?

For this layout, I used a sketch provided by Simple Scrapper. I also used paper and embellishments from primarily the Ali Edwards December Daily 2015 kit by Jasmine Jones.

Documenting a loss | Simple Scrapper

It's never easy to document a loss.  However, I was prompted by a Story Starter from Jennifer Wilson's Simple Scrapper to give it a try.  Although the layout isn't perfect in my mind, I don't believe I could ever really scrapbook it perfectly.

I started with the story and used the celebration of life cards as the photo.  However, a photo really isn't necessary. Ali Edwards had a Story Kit named "Tough" therefore; I used elements from that kit to create the clean and simple page.

As I started this process, I realized that I would pop on Facebook Live and document the process.  Check out the video if you are interested.

This was hard.  The past few weeks we knew that Natasha was not doing well. We hadn’t been hearing much from her except from a scattered message here and there.  We knew she had a hard time texting and often it was her husband or friends messaging us.  She took a turn just before Christmas and we all knew she would soon find her way as an angel.  Every thing had been pre-planned.  We had been talking about it for months.  A bucket list, quilts and knitted hats for the hospital babies were being made, funeral favours and secret tasks were planned.  But when it came, it was too quiet.  Rhea and I met in Goobies to make the trek to Natasha’s celebration of life on December 27th.  Natasha was a friend that I met through scrapbooking and as was Rhea.  It’s this hobby that brought three of us together.  She was something special and the world is certainly at a lost without her.  Her illness re-ignited my faith. Something I never thought would happen. I suppose that might be her greatest gift to me.  Even after almost a year has gone by, I find it hard to explain to those close to me what Natasha meant to me.  I wrote a card to Ray, her husband sending my condolescences and perhaps that’s the best way to describe it.

“Dear Ray.  I am a little bit of a mystery friend.  We spoke a lot but mostly by iMessage. Natasha was my every day.  Like a cup of coffee. Only it was an every hour cup. We have many stories but my brain is too mushy to think.  It wasn’t “good morning” – it was “what’s for breakfast?” or ‘ I am worried about..’ She solved many of my day to day dilemmas (how do you cook frozen peas?) She. Was. My. Every. Day. And because of that, you all were too. From the bottom of my heart, I am so sorry for your loss.”

And so, documenting her funeral isn’t exactly something I want to do but for some reason it feels appropriate. There was pink everything. And peep favours and a release of pink balloons.  There was a coating of snow and while as pallbearers, I could hear every crunch.  I heard every breath.  And I avoided every tearful eye.  Not ready to let her go, Rhea and I left to go home with “something missing”.   I still think of her often for many reasons.  Little reasons. Like… I washed, folded and put away three loads of laundry!  Every time I reach for my Lock n Lock Tupperware containers and every time I make frozen peas.  She’s probably watching me and wondering how I make it every day without her.  I really am not sure either.  But I am ready to live this life the way she’d want me to… we are heading to Disney soon where I am sure to meet her there.

Thanks for the lessons and the friendship Tash. Love always, Cathy.

Brenda + Darleen | Simple Scrapper

This layout began with one photo and a story that I wanted to tell.  I love this photo of my mother and my aunt - look how happy they are!  The truth is that they are happy - they live miles and miles apart yet somehow their connection doesn't skip a beat.

Could my sister and I be so lucky in twenty years?

Let's hope so.

The majority of the elements used in this 12x12 layout is from Ali Edwards Story kits.  I continue to use those kits as my "go to" for embellishments and Project Life cards.

Every Summer Has a Story | Simple Scrapper

These pictures bring back memories from a year ago.

As many of you know, I scrapbook chronologically using both pocket pages and traditional layouts.  To make it work, I pick out what I want to scrapbook traditionally. After that, any pictures that are left must go in pocket pages. Usually that means, they will be placed in a "month in review" page such as the one above.

To understand more about my process, check out this post on Simple Scrapper.

There's no theme. No rhyme or reason to any of this. I am jumping brands and supplies.  With that said, I am known to try my best to use what's on my desk rather than move to get something else.

Do you have any tricks like mine? I'd love to here your tips!

friends forever | Simple Scrapper

Awww, one of my best friends. Miss Aoife.

Like many of my friends, we don't see each other as often as we'd like - it seems that this is just the way life is.  As time goes by, we call and go out to dinner to catch up. It runs in cycle but typically doesn't run over a month.  We always pick up where we left off. She's more than a bestie.  She's an 'Auntie' to my kids.

So, when Canada Day came all those years ago and we received a call that her brother, Neil, was in a major car accident, we were all there. Waiting and praying. He later passed away but he will never be forgotten.

And do you know why?  It's because on the following Canada Day, she made a decision to celebrate his life in a way that he would be thrilled about - a soccer tournament and some drinks with friends and family.  No matter how much time has gone by, we know exactly where to be on Canada Day. With her alongside her many friends and family - celebrating the life of Neil.

She's a forever friend.  The kind of friend that you would do anything for because you know she'd do the same.

This layout was created with paper from the Pink Fresh Documented collection.  There is a glassine bag behind the photo when I am ready to journal this picture and event. (Perhaps I just did above)

My Sister and I | Simple Scrapper June 2016

This layout was created about a year later than when it was taken.  Its funny how I feel like we are having the same conversation and connection one year later.

We are sisters.
But also best friends.
We look similar and have
similar interests.
We have kids around the same
age that enjoy each others company.
We are always trying to be supportive in our journey to a healthier life.
Through thick and thin,
we are there.
I am so lucky to have a sister
that loves me the way she does.
I am so glad that she
lives close by and we can
enjoy each other’s company in a blink
of an eye.
She is my sister and she’s my rock.

Welcome to the Jungle | Simple Scrapper

Jennifer Wilson of Simple Scrapper is always inspiring us with story starters and sketches.  This month she inspired us with the 1980s. Being born in 1981, I can certainly relate.  I turned by photo into a spin off of the Taylor Swift album cover, 1989.

The photo was taken in 2008 at my home as I hosted an 80s party with friends. You can be sure this life was pre-kids.

It was great to re-kindle those memories!!

An Awesome Day | Simple Scrapper

I want to remember//
how a last minute decision to go sledding became a beautiful adventure and a new family tradition.

I want to remember//
that Jack would refuse to wear mittens but on this sunny Saturday afternoon, he was content to wear them.

I want to remember//
that Jane loved every single second of each ride but Jack was ready to go home after a couple turns.

I want to remember//
how getting on a crazy carpet sent a flood of childhood memories back - and guess what? It was so fun.

I want to remember//
To do this every time the snow and sun is just right. Because the truth is, there’s not many perfect snow sledding days each season. Seize the moment.

DO | Simple Scrapper

I don't always scrapbook about people but rather things that I am doing.  Lately, I've been busy getting organized.  It's a slow process but I can see a different in productivity, which is certainly ensuring I live a happy life. The little things seem to be

For this layout, I was inspired by Jennifer Wilson's story starters, which relate to the Spring Cleaning theme.  To find out more, you must become a member at Simple Scrapper.

As with many of my layouts these days, I continue to be inspired by Ali Edwards story kits.  This layout has some of those embellishments.

Check out those large alphas, which I believe came from Studio Calico.  I adhered those to a 4x4 transparency by stapling them.  This gave them the look that they are floating.

Come back again next month so I can show you my May Simple Scrapper layouts.

Photograph at the Beach | Simple Scrapper

oh hello, my friends!

As many of you know, I live on an island on the East Coast of North America called Newfoundland. Like many, east coast areas you'd think there would be many sandy beaches; however, you are more likely to find a rocky beach here.  What's worse is that there's a small window of summer days that you would consider a good beach day. We got lucky and found ourselves in Terra Nova Park, a Canadian National Park, on a beautiful sunny day.  We headed to Sandy Pond (Newfoundland is incredibly "original" in their naming of people, places and things), a shallow water pond with a soft sandy beach.

We went to the beach with my sister and her family.  They get along amazingly and we are incredibly grateful to have children around the same age that get along. (In fact we are vacationing together in Florida right now).

Isn't it great as a child when you have cousins that are the same age? My husband wasn't as lucky and makes mention of this almost every family event.

One of my favourites memories from this trip is the fact that my son simply refused to take off his sneakers.  He also refused to get in the water.  My daughter on the other hand, wouldn't get out of the water.  However, both her in their glee - one enjoyed the sand while the other, the water.   There were also precious moments of hand holding, big smiles and buried dinkies. Those are the moments that I don't want to forget.

For this double layout, I used Stampin' Up! paper as my background paper and embellished largely with Ali Edwards Story kits chipboard words.

The layout comes from a sketch provided by Jennifer Wilson at Simple Scrapper.

Hope you are busy creating memories!
Cheers,
Cathy

Simple Scrapper March 2016

Welcome back to check out my projects created for  Simple Scrapper's member-only SPARK magazine. Both of these layouts were prompted by a journal prompt and a sketch.

This particular layout was created using the lovely Pink Fresh collection.

"We are a family business.  My father started this company 26 years ago with one little store, which has grown to 12 stores.  I went through business school and started a career but ended up back here.  While my parents go to Florida, I hold the reins.  It makes me proud - what’s he’s accomplished.  And so, I want to be the one to ensure my family’s future is secure for generations to come.  It’s a big thing to lay on someone, but I am prepared and certainly have the support.  This is the Christmas party - every year we celebrate with the staff."

I love this paper.  I really do.  It's from the All Boy collection by Crate Paper.  In actually fact, it was from her very first kit released in January of 2015.

Have a great day!

Snuggle up | Simple Scrapper

Today I am back to show you my layouts for Simple Scrapper's Spark Magazine.

Jennifer Wilson, the Simple Scrapper guru is always finding fascinating ways to inspire me.  This month is no exception and I am thrilled to be sharing my projects with you and her thriving membership.

This first layout was inspired by a sketch that is provided to the site's members only.  But her sketch's aren't just sketches.  They are colour coded in a way that makes it even easier. This layout began with a photo and journalling.  I do love to tell a story.

The next layout I created was a Project Life layout.  It is actually from Valentines Day of last year.  I tend to leave pages for a long time until I feel inspired to create them.

Are you curious how I keep everything organized while mixing Project Life and traditional pages?  Here's some of my secrets as I describe them in a post for Creative Scrapbooker Magazine.

Can you see where I placed valentines in the glassine bag on the bottom row?  Of course, I only kept a few.

It's great timing to do this layout - I hope to inspire you to create your Valentines layouts.

Enjoy and I'll be back next month with more layouts for Simple Scrapper!

You are My Sunshine | #refreshmethod

Ahhhh.
Those photos show pure joy.

That little guy got out of the house on Canada Day morning and he decided he wanted to be chased.  So I did.

And he laughed.
And he smiled.
And I got his pure joy on camera.

And I can't help but smile when I look at them.

I created this layout in an attempt to conquer one of the challenges in the Refresh course taught by Jennifer Wilson at Simple Scrapper.  The challenge, called The Brown Noser is to use a sketch to get inspired.  I decided to use this one, which I am using in a challenge I have with a group of Facebook Friends in memory of my friend, Natasha Connolly.

Two Birds. One Stone.

Enjoy,
Cathy

2016 album cover | Simple Scrapper's Refresh

My daughter and I were in my craft room.
Jane is 5 and wants to be a traveller, a gymnast, a builder and a drawing teacher when she grows up.
I asked her to take a picture of me right now.
And so she did.

I've been having a tough time getting back into the swing of things.

Simple Scrapper's seasonal Refresh course fell on my lap and I decided to take a couple swings.  Gosh, it's nice when you feel inspired.

Using inspiration from Jennifer Wilson's Refresh course, I created my intro page to my 2016 album.  This year, I am going with a 8.5x11" album so this page protector from Stampin' Up! was cut down by an inch. Yes, this means I have to re-do the holes as well.

Like Ali Edwards, Jennifer encouraged students to document your reason why.  And so I did.

Scrapbooking for me is more than just a hobby. It’s more than just glueing pictures on a page.  I have a reason why.  I have many reasons why.  It simply fills me up.  The finished product is one thing. I smile and sometimes cry when I look at my albums. I am often reminded at how cherished these books will be someday if something tragic would ever happen to me or my loved ones.  I am reminded how special my handwriting will be to my children.  I am reminded the pages are special when I see the way my children’s faces light up as they flip through the albums.

The pages document our lives.  They document our joys and our sorrows. They document our accomplishments and failures.  They document our blessings but also our hopes and dreams for the future.

It’s not just the finished pages.  It’s the creation of those pages.  I find inspiration in the photos, the words and the product. If  I had an extra hour in a day just for me, I’d be here. I’d be at my white table surrounded by pretty things. It’s like therapy - Words and photos on pages. Perhaps its working through emotions and certainly is an exercise of reflection.

Scrapbooking and memory keeping fills me up. To be a good mom, lover and friend - I need to be filled up. Scrapbooking for me is more than just a hobby. That's for sure.

And while I finished up "my reason why", my daughter finished up her drawing - showcasing a "frame" with colour coordinating enamel dots.  She's special.

Until next time.
Cathy

Simple Scrapper | January 2016

I have exciting news!
See anyone you recognize?

That's me, top row, second in from the right.

I am pumped!

I am one of the newest Simple Scrapper Design Team members!
Simple Scrapper is a membership based memory keeping community led by Jennifer Wilson.  Believe me, she does not disappoint.

I have two layouts to share as part of the Simple Scrapper Creative Design Team.

These two pages are included in her member only monthly magazine called Spark.  They are based on a story theme and/or sketches.  The story themes are prompts that can help keep you inspired in your memory keeping journey.  The sketches are always a great resource to have.

This first layout was created from Christmas last year.  The background paper is the words to "Twas the Night Before Christmas".  A tradition at my in laws is to read the story on Christmas Eve; however, it never goes as smoothly as you see in the movies. :)

My next layout is 8.5x11" - a size that I intend to continue to use going into 2016.  I love the album size and I seem to be attracted to the how the layouts turn out.

Most of the products I used in this layout is from the Ali Edwards Story Kits.  I've subscribed to these since Day One and I am still in love with them as much as I was a year ago.

The acrylic "click" is the story prompt for that particular month.  Ali always includes one of these acrylic words in every kit.  I continue to be drawn to them and have to resist the urge to "hoard" them.

Have a great day!
Cathy
