Go. See. Do. | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

This is a shining example of how you can use multiple photos on a layout in a fun way! The trick is to print them small - these happen to be 2x3 with a border printed with my Canon Selphy. Secondly I placed them on the 8.5x11" page first and allowed the picture to hang over the edges. Once I placed the alphas and was happy with the positioning I adhered the pieces... only after these steps did I cut the overhanging edges.

Habit. | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

Keeping good habits is never easy but in recent years I’ve been doing a better job at reflecting on what habits I want to have and how to acheive them. Writing in planenrs have always been a way for me to do that but bullet journals seem to be the best so far. The small sized annual books givs me enough structure and flexibility that it works for me. I take three bullet journals with me everywhere. You’ll find them on the kitchen table and dragged across the country. They keep me on task and on time. I feel in control and focused when I use them consistently. Ironically, in times when I am too busy I often won’t plan because I don’t prioritize it. I start to feel overwhelmed and realize I should never skip the few minutes to put pen to paper. Yes. I am a planner girl.

Teal: Planner //
My day to day planner where I write activities, appointments and many to do lists. Sometimes I include meal plans or lists detailing everything from parties to packing lists.

Orange: Work //
A lined bullet journal that has notes detailing phone calls and conversations. This is where I note skus and things related to work that I can’t forget.

Purple: Creative //
Each page is different as I note my mthly deadlines, list sales orders, customer address changes and everything in between. When creativity sparks, I get it on paper in here.

His Voice. | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

"At almost six and entering Grade One, Jack still speaks in that adorable baby voice. Words like 'germ' sound like 'drone'. He says 'hers' instead of 'she'. Sometimes people need me to interpret him or he's asked to repeat himself several times. It can cause him to be really frustrated. I feel for him in those moments but truth be told I could listen to his adorable baby voice until the cows come home."

Details | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

How fun?
This layout was created with the idea in mind to have a cover page with an overall review of the places we had been on our vacation.
Joining pieces together was super fun with the Stampin' Up! black thread.

In and Out | Simple Scrapper SPARK Magazine

Off on another another adventure.
I can breath again.
It’s the moments in the airport before the gate opens up that allows me to breath.
In and out.
In and out.
Slowly now.
In and out.
It doesn’t matter where I am going. If it’s just me and my passport with no one else to worry about, I can find my peace.
I can worry about me.
And when I board the plane, no one can find me.
No one can contact me.
Everything is out of my control.
And that’s when I can taste the air.
Where am I going again?

CREATING PROCESS

This hybrid project began within Adobe Photoshop where I inserted my photo and added the journalling using the Remington Noiseless font as you can see above.  The above file was then printed on my own printer.

Once the page was printed I add the title and plaed around with the chipboard pieces until they were just right.

Keepin' it simply just one layout at a time.

No Ipads on the Table | Simple Scrapper

Another little story.
Another seemingly unremarkable photo.
But behind this photo there's a story.

We have a no device rule at the table. We’ve had it since the kids had ipads so we don’t have to give too many reminders. But today was Jane’s birthday - when they sat down with their pancakes in the shape of the letter J, I decided that it would be okay for them to share a show. Technology isn’t always connecting each other but sometimes it really does.

This layout was created for the August 2017 issue of SPARK magazine, a monthly magazine exclusively for members of the Simple Scrapper online community. Owner, Jennifer Wilson provides sketches and story starters each month that help drive inspiration in your quest to document your memories.

This layout was designed on a 8.5 x 11" piece of cardstock. I typed my journalling using the Remington Noiseless font within the Photoshop Creative Cloud software. This came together quickly until I wanted to use the striped patterned paper until the photo as well as a backing to the page.  As such, I had to secretly but out a hold from the centre of the patterned paper and then adhere it under the picture.  I suppose its a great way to make your patterned paper go a long way.

Canada 150 | Simple Scrapper

July 1, 2017 marked Canada's 150th birthday.  Across the country people were celebrating in style. For me and my family, it was a beautiful day of spontaneity and adventure. Although the picture didn't come out as perfectly as I would have liked, they told a story.

"It had been a long month.  The first of June found our family in Mexico but my life was being rushed as vacations meant I had a lot less time to get the annual financial statements filed. Working late, eating on the fly and rushing from one place to another.  I was overwhelmed.  It was June 30th and Ryan had cooked a BBQ. After supper while the kids were outside on the trampoline, we watched the news.  Something we don’t do often for one reason or another.  There was a local missing girl and we continued to hope there was more information on her case.  Instead I watched the weather man, Eddie Sheer do his newscast from a “Canada 100” sign at the bottom of signal hill.  I turned to Ryan and said “I wanna go there”. Not sure why but Ryan replaied “Let’s do it.”  We asked the kids whether they were interested and neither of them wanted to join us.  Throwing in an ice cream got them strapped into the SUV.  I grabbed my DLSR camera and took a few pictures on the way down.  It was a gorgeous day. The fog will start rolling in soon, I am sure. When we got to the spot the news crew were just finishing off their final sign off. Perfect timing.  We stood and waited for them and then started to take our pictures.  A line began to form behind us so all of a sudden I felt rushed in my pictures.  It didn’t matter.  I didn’t get the picture I wanted but I got a day of exploring after wards.  The kids ran down the trail and up the steep rocks.  With every foot step, I was a nervous wreck pictuing one of them running off a clift.  Ryan was getting irritated by my barks to stay close.  I couldn’t help it.  They sat on the cannons and sat in the grass. They raced over the grassy hills and looked for the light house. All the while I snapped pictures as the sun was setting. It was beautiful.  The night was warm and it was exactly what I needed to kick off a new month. Of course, we all ate ice cream to cap it off."

These layouts were created for SPARK magazine, which is a monthly magazine for members of the Simple Scrapper online community. Owner, Jennifer Wilson provides sketches and story starters each month that help drive inspiration in your quest to document your memories.

My design style was very clean and simple.  It started out with the story typed using the Remington Noiseless typewriter font within Photoshop Creative Cloud.  This was printed out on Whisper Whiter cardstock by Stampin' Up! on 8.5"x 11".

As a subscriber to the Ali Edwards Story Kits, I found some chipboard elements and embellishments that quickly brought this layout together.

Toronto. A Three Page Story. | International Scrapbook Day

Today is International Scrapbook Day and I am hanging out with my friends at Creative Scrapbooker Magazine.

My layouts today are 8.5"x11".  I've choosen this album size since 2016 and it seems to be working well for me.

This "one page" layout turned into a 3 page layout with a sort of 'title' page and then a story.
.. one lengthy story.  I've included the journalling below in case you wanted to follow along.

I started to build my layout by looking at my photos and deciding if there were any "focal" point photos.  In other words, a photo that could stand alone.  It was almost easy as you can see the three of us standing in front of the Toronto sign.

Secondly, I began to write.
.. and write...
... and write some more.

It was unending.
My initial plan was to do a pocket page but there was too many words. Plan B was to create a sort of map. But that failed too as it was spread almongst two pages.

Once I finished the journalling in a Word document I opened up two pages in Photoshop and played with the text.  Once I was happy with it, I printed it to my every day printer.

Some might say this could be consider a hybrid layout.
You be the judge.

Using my Canon Selphy I printed several other 2x3" photos.  Although I didn't use most of them, I stuck what I considered the most important ones.  Since I am wild and crazy, I cut the photos out using my... scissors! gasp!

Eventually, I was happy with the placement of all my photos. I used dimensionals to pop them off the page.

Using some speech bubbles from Ali Edwards story kits, I considered this ultra simple layout complete.

The timing couldn’t have been better – a weekend adventure to Toronto.  With only an hour of sleep the night before, I was surprised at my energy when Colleen picked me up early evening. The sun was crashing through the window as we headed to pick up Paula.  No need to be concerned about flight cancellations, you would think. We were wrong. A short delay - but that gave us a little more time to catch up and unwind.

With no checked luggage we scampered onto the Up train to Union Station.  Then down into the subway to Dundas Street. It was raining now and reminded me a little of a travelling scene from the Harry Potter movies. Finally, arriving into our boutique hotel room at the Bond Place Hotel. The hotel lobby was small and uncomplicated.  One man was on the desk and was oddly accommodating as he passed out tap water to each of us. The hotel room was composed of a queen size bed and two twin beds.  A bathroom with a sliding door without a lock. Perfect for a family of four and interesting for a group of three.

It didn’t take long for me to fall asleep. Goodnight Thursday.

It was Friday when I woke up to the other two yakking.  Soon the door would crack open as a housekeeper tried to enter.  Come on now. It was for certain before 10am. Definitely time for a beautiful breakfast. Fran’s was just around the corner and did not disappoint.  A perfect 24 hour diner with freshly squeezed orange juice made right in front of your eyes.  I wonder how much those juicers cost They don’t even peel the rinds off.  Across the street was the iconic Massey Hall. The billboard outside said “Live at Live Hall: Joel Plaskett Solidarity Tour”. Yes please.  We snagged tickets and headed to H&M.

Over an hour of sweating inside and outside the fitting rooms, I could finally say I was done.  Why is it always so hot in stores?  The sun was shining again but it was time to make our way onto the Go Trains to Exhibition Park.

Sometimes I wonder about us three.  Perhaps we need a chaperone.  Or at least a time keeper.  Maybe a navigation expert.  We sat on the train while it stopped at Exhibition Park.  When the train slowly started to pull away we looked at each other and said “Was that Exhibition Park?”. Across the cement walls, we saw the words passing by.  It sure was.  Stopping at Mimico, we raced across the platforms to catch a train the wrong train.  Then we raced across again chasing another. Eventually making our way to Exhibition Park where I would set up my samples for Stampin’ Up!’s OnStage event to take place there tomorrow.

Back to the hotel we go and out to Montecito restaurant.  It did not disappoint.  The waitress had a hard time smiling but she felt important so we played the game.  Wine and drinks with charcuterie and steak tartare. Just give me all the wine. Yes. I’ll take it all.

It was a hop, skip and a jump to Mrs. Henderson, a play that we had booked the week before. Always an adventure when you didn’t know you’d be watching women prancing around without their tops on.  We left the play and dragged Colleen away from a basement bar with the base so loud I felt my belly inside my head.  Down the street we ran into the “Toronto” sign.  A stranger showed off his photography skills to his girlfriend as he genuinely wanted to take our picture for us.

Back at the hotel room, I dropped into a slumber for our early rise the next morning to Exhibition Park.

When the event was over, we walked over to the Train Station and headed back to Union Station.  It was a breeze. We had finally mastered the train.  Stopping at Blaze pizza for a bite before landing ourselves into Massey Hall for Joel Plaskett.

Before going to the concert, I contacted an old friend who likely introduced me to Joel Plaskett.  Joni and Matt were downstairs with some friends.  I joined them for a beer and simply couldn’t contain my excitement of seeing her again.  Joni is a forever friend and up for any type of adventures.  Time may pass but you never know when we’ll be together again.  Thanks for the beer Joni and until next time.

Upstairs we climbed to the second balcony.  We were close to the stage and could see all angles. We plopped into the classic red velour seats and looked at each other when we realized that the backs popped out and the seat cushion moved forward. I marveled at the fact that I could see everything. I saw people’s reactions to the songs and who was using a camera or not. CYou could hear all the yells and banter.  A perfect venue and a perfect concert.

The night didn’t end there. We walked to Lena for a last call where we drank tequila and some drinks. Tequila. As if that is ever a good idea. And Thelma and Louise over there were shooting extras while I was in the washroom. They would live to regret that later, I am sure. Next we moved to the Hard Rock Café for vodka.  By now we have a case of the giggles and wander our way back to the Bond Street Hotel.

When I woke up the next morning, the Blonde was asking the Brunette at what time she moved out of her bed.  It would seem that I missed out on plenty of bed time conversation. It was Sunday and we were heading home early evening but there was much shopping left to be done. I circled around my bed and watched Paula guzzle some water then tuck herself back under the covers.  “Not today Junior.” Colleen and I headed to Adidas on the quest to find the perfect pair of triple white ultra boost sneakers for my husband.  It was the last quest I needed to claim Wife of the Year.  Apparently this feat was difficult but settled on a similar pair from Foot Nation.  Feeling quite pleased with myself, we headed back to nab our sleeping beauty.

She was a state but ready to rumble. We wandered down to Queen Street and almost walked directly into a sign stating “Hangover kits available here”. Well then. Sure thing, chicken wing.

Yeah no. That didn’t work.

I do like to shop and talk. So we did.  Blu Boho was lined with perfectly casings of jewelry. The door showed a fresh coat of paint and inside there was a navy blue velour couch with pin cushions.  I watched a photographer come off the street to take photos inside. I couldn’t help but agree that there was something about this place that was perfection.

“You are loved” the bracelet said. So, I bought it for Jane. A perfect gift.

It was now time for me to meet my cousin while Colleen and Paula headed in their our direction.  I was waiting in Nordstroms but it was simply to hot for me and I wandered next door in the Eaton Centre.  Inside people were waiting in line for what seemed to be flowers. With a closer look I noticed they were making flower tiaras to celebrate the arrival of Spring.  With nothing else to do but wait, I hopped in line until Amanda arrived. I watched ballet dancers come and go and volunteers handing out gerbers. Light was streaming from the roof into the foyer and I couldn’t help but think how lucky people have it here. So much opportunity and so much flavor. When Amanda arrived, she looked at me unsure whethershe wanted to join me or not. Oh Amanda.  Just go with the flow. We placed the real flowers around a stem using wire to secure them in place.  When they were done, we plopped them on our head and took a snap. Gosh.  We are a beautiful little bunch, aren’t we?  For the rest of the day I wandered the stores with my flower tiara.

By the time I had met back up with Colleen and Paula, I was zonked.  It was coming past the time we were to meet to catch our cab back to the airport. And all the while, they had been downstairs attending church.  It was indeed Palm Sunday. It’s a funny day. It was a day where we really just didn’t know where we’d end up.. making tiaras or attending church in the bottom of a hotel.

Until next time Toronto. That was truly fun.

Hello Sunday: Stories and Photos | #weekinthelife2017

What is Week in the Life?:// Week In the Life is a project created by Ali Edwards where by you document a snapshot in time. Capturing mundane details of your everyday and perhaps your not so mundane moments.  This is my story and my photos for #weekinthelife2017. To see my #weekinthelife2016 stories and photos you can check out it here: #weekinthelife2016

I made it to Sunday.
Truth is I've been busy.  Too busy.  Soon I must say no to things. Not the fun stuff though. I like the fun stuff.

I started the morning at 6am by creating a project for the Stampin' Up! Artisan Design Team.  It's a great way to start a Sunday morning actually but I didn't like my project.  And I still don't.  You'll see in a few weeks. With that, I wanted to truly torture myself by creating a YouTube video. They are tough to do and time consuming but I need to do a better job at keeping my channel filled with new content.

Once the 13 minute video was completed I took a quick look to make sure that my camera wasn't upside down... That has happened too many times to count. Nope.  Not upside down.  But did it cut off... it sure did. Perfect. Bloody f*#king perfect.

By now the kids are up. At 4 and 6 years of age, they can occupy themselves for a little while.  I need to remember to put the orange juice lower in the fridge so that I don't get nagged to death in the mornings for a drink.

As always, we typically have at least one big breakfast with the whole family on the weekends. Its a small thing but I always look forward to it. This time I was in charge and I made a smorg-ous-borg of meat.  It was nice.  The four of us just slamming some eggs and toast. But the hustle was about to begin.

All four of us piled in the car at 10:30am to make the first drop off as Jane went to gymnastics for three hours.  Next was Ryan to go to soccer. First game of the season, he says.  Jack and I were left to kill a couple hours.

Costco it is.
Bad call.
We quite literally parked in the second last parking spot.
That should have been a sign of the bump and grind games I'd have to play inside.

Quick fact here.  Newfoundland. That's where I live.  Picture a large remote island in the Atlantic Ocean with approximately 500,000 people living on it.  On the whole island... now you tell me how its possible that we have one of the top busiest Costcos in the World.

Alright. I'll tell you.
Because we are downright wingnuts.
And its hard to get good produce.
And we plan our weekends around Costco.
Not me.  Not anymore.
But man.  The grapes were great today.  So were the strawberries but not for $5.79.

With still some time to kill, we ran to Michaels as I had a couple things to pick up for friends. It was worth going there just to see Jack in his element.  Man. This kid loves to shop.

I picked up the other child and back home we go.

Immediately I have declared a "Mommy Gets a Time Out." Nobody is to enter the bedroom for 20 minutes. Costco did me in. Or was it my kids? It's so hard to tell.

I love my bedroom and I love this view.  I basically re-mortgaged my house to get the house fitted with drapes and blinds last summer but it was worth every penny.  Someday. Someday... I repeat... someday I'll finish putting up the wall paper....

You could probably tell it was raining today.
Oh and that black magic ball was wrong about the snow being gone by Friday.  That dirt pile was still there irritating me on my lawn. I wish I can tell you that the rain would beat it down... but I live in a much higher elevation than rainy Costco-land. It's snow here. It won't last but for certain it's a bummer.

I am reminded that I haven't moved much all week.  I need to make this a priority.  I know that but I always just don't make it a priority.  Yeah. That's true.  I should do something bought that. With the dreadful weather, there's not much motivation to get up and go.

However, I walked and then I ran.  Walked some more and ran again.  A solid fifteen minutes of running is quite enough for this girl.  Rooney the dog joined me and as always was a perfect companion.

Before we all headed to bed Jack joined me in my craft room to make a card for his friend William.  He seems to be more interested in holding a pencil these days so now I just roll with it. He's carefully making sure that he destroys the nibs of every single one of my Stampin' Up! markers.  Thank you Jack.

Good night Sunday. Until next time Week in the Life.
Cathy

Hello Saturday: Photos and Stories | #weekinthelife2017

What is Week in the Life?:// Week In the Life is a project created by Ali Edwards where by you document a snapshot in time. Capturing mundane details of your everyday and perhaps your not so mundane moments.  This is my story and my photos for #weekinthelife2017. To see my #weekinthelife2016 stories and photos you can check out it here: #weekinthelife2016

Saturdays look like this.

I slept for almost 12 hours.

But I still found it hard to get going on this Saturday.

Soon I was out the door to take the kids to soccer.
I forgot my phone.
Nightmare.
We had an amazing time and I would have liked to capture that. It was a parent and tot session with Jack but Jane joined in.  We played tag. A lot.  Jack's laugh is one of those types of laughs where you wonder if his belly is going to take off. I must remember to play a simple game of tag more often.  It's as awesome as hide and go seek.

We left soccer and were ready to make some lunch decisions.  Either rice or sandwiches.  We picked Manna sandwiches and we had to wait in a long line to get it.  But Jack didn't mind because he thought there was a chocolate chip muffin in his future.  He was wrong.  Instead he and Jane got an amazing donut.  To my surprise after Jane's first bite of donut she said "The sandwich was better. Best sandwich ever."

"I couldn't agree more Jane.  It turns out the best sandwiches are right in our own backyard."

Let me just say it again... can you believe that I forgot my camera today at soccer?

Yes, those are movie glasses with the plastic popped out.  She wears them all the time and someone even complimented her today at Manna Bakery.  I wonder if she knew the difference...

Soon we were on the go again for Jane to go to her own soccer. She was quite pleased that the shorts matched her shirt so perfectly.  She directed me to put her hair in a hair pony hair. "Yes my master", I say.

But no little girl should go to soccer without her sparkly shoes.

Finally she left and I was left with this guy clearly tore up about it.. Just chillin'.

My supper was atrocious. Perogies and insta rice with microwaved peas and carrots. Boo.  I have to remember to meal plan and get groceries.  Lately it seems I don't have time for the tiniest of things... no planning has been done all week.

It can't be bed time without a selfie with Mom.

Much of the night I was designing projects and cutting wedding programs... its a regular thing in my life.

Good night Saturday.

Hello Thursday: Stories and Photos | #weekinthelife2017

What is Week in the Life?:// Week In the Life is a project created by Ali Edwards where by you document a snapshot in time. Capturing mundane details of your everyday and perhaps your not so mundane moments.  This is my story and my photos for #weekinthelife2017. To see my #weekinthelife2016 stories and photos you can check out it here: #weekinthelife2016

My house is in shambles.
My computer is slowing down because there's no more space on it.
The overwhelm continues.
But like yesterday, today we are going to see icebergs.... right after I go to the dentist for a regular teeth cleaning. That's the plan anyway.

I did manage to wake a good hour before Jane hopped out of bed.  When she came downstairs Rooney the Dog followed.  Three of us cuddled on the couch for a half an hour.  It's so fun to watch Jane connect with the dog.  Rooney adores her and its because of the attention Jane gives her these days.  I wonder where she gets her "ohhhh, you are such a good Rooney Dog.  You are okay. You are okay.  Just breath Rooney." Then I realize it's me. She's me. She may not look like me but she's for certain me.

Once Jack got up, both kids began building a City.  This room is just off the porch and is constantly look like an explosion happened.  But if you look closely you can see that there are little figurines placed carefully inside plastic containers, which are then placed inside a truck or an Octonaut pad. You will see like-minded toys lined up together ready to 'Save the Day'.  Today, Jane was working on an airport for Jack's lego helicopter... which looks nothing like a helicopter.

This room sends chills up my spine with all its unorganization and disarray but it's also like a piece of art.  I just wish I could walk through to grab a coat off their cubby hooks.  Here I am remembering that some day they won't be playing with toys and to just let them play... turning a blind eye.

My teeth are clean and it's time to make the 35 minute drive to Ferryland where the massive iceberg is floating.  We planned to take in the drive, check out the ice and grab some fish and chips on the way back.

The photos will never do these icebergs justice but the size of them were unlike any I have seen before.  I am disappointed in my myself that I couldn't find my fancy long distance camera lens.  But that's life at the moment.  The kids thought they were cool but they thought the rocky beach was even cooler.  Beach rocks are pretty cool... so soft and round.  Perfect. The beach was not quiet. You could heard the beach rocks rolling into the beach.  So cool.

It was not warm so we didn't stay long.  Next stop was Riverside Convenience and it was busy.  In a moment of Mom intuition I grabed the post-it notes I had brought to make my grocery list in the car into the restaurant, as well as some markers to help the kids pass away some time.

This. This my friends... is the most impressive drawing I have ever seen by Jack.  This is Ryan.  He carefully placed a dot smack in the middle of the circle to make his nose. He raised the post it up in his hands and looked at Ryan with one eye. "Yup. That definitely looks like Dad."  Yeah kid.  It sure does.

Tonight would prove to be something new for us. Jane has one of her friends sleep over. This is definitely not unusual but it is the first time that Natalie would sleep over.  It just so happens that her brother is Jack's bestie also. We swapped kids for sleepovers.

Here's the kicker.. Jack has never slept over anywhere besides family and is very much a lover of his own bed.  "I am not sleeping over Mom.  I just want to stay a couple days." He says.  Makes sense Buddy. We assumed we'd be picking him up at some point but we didn't expect any problems and we were right. Soon the boys were filled with candy and popcorn. By 10 o'clock, William drifted off to sleep while Jack was still playing with toys.  Finally he says, "Can I go to my house now?"  God love him.  He's so predictable but I am so proud that he got that far.

I can't even deal with their cuteness.

Jane and Natalie on the other hand are busy playing with toys and practising gymnastics. When Natalie found out that the boys were enjoying candy and popcorn, she said "That's not fair Mom! We've only had healthy snacks!" Like a sucker, I gave in to the pressure. But honestly, stove top popcorn is my snack of choice despite my chips picture yesterday.

The girls fell asleep around 11pm and I spent the next two hours in a state of chaos.

I stayed up too late tonight. I'll pay for that tomorrow.

Goodnight Thursday,
Cathy
